Self Assessment

Research and Research Process

My ultimate goal for engaging in research is to contribute to the development of mathematical understanding for learners. In reflection and in consultation with my advisor and faculty, I have shifted from mobile learning to self regulated elearning for professional development for k-8 educators. My background in teaching mathematics and participating in prior research on developing mathematical understanding has greatly influenced this shift to my current research interest. My current graduate assistant position involved building an online professional development course for eMAPPs. I made this my project for Dr. Orey`s EDIT 6190 course last semester. The peer review and leadership from Dr. Orey helped me a lot in developing this idea. Implementing and researching this intervention will be an extension of the prior three year research study conducted on MAPPs. (I was not involved in the design but in several intervention implementations, data collection, analysis and reporting). I have since improved my understanding of the research process a little more and I am more informed about the different types of research approaches. I will continue to develop my research idea by analyzing the literature and developing a theoretical framework on self regulated elearning as a model for professional development for teachers, to develop mathematical content knowledge.

Technology

I entered the program with very limited technology experience. I have since been either exposed to or implemented the use of so much new instructional technology. My knowldge was limited to various software suites and a couple learning management systems. Due to the rigor of the courses, and in a short space of time I have added the following:Articulate, captivate, storyboarding, interactive powerpoint, compiling instructional videos, editing software, project management software – EDIT 7520, basic coding (EDIT 6400), ( EDIT 9990) cool tools i.e. – CoSketch, RealTimeBoard, Piazza. Learning Mangement Systems: Blackboard, Angel, D2L, Moodle. Statistical software:  SPSS and R. Several web design tools and web 2.0 tools.

Teaching

I do have formal teaching experience at k-12 and at technical college level. Working with faculty to build their online courses in elc new through the office of online learning has been a valuable experience both with learning the technology and the various course designs and pedagogy. While this was not teaching, but it was planning for lesson delivery which all teachers have to do.During the summer I was added to the online courses as a co - instructor / auditor, to assist students with elc logistics. I have instructed web enhanced hybrid math courses using Mathlab for a technical college for several years.
